Who is The MaD CA in a nutshell?
Lloyd Scott Hudson aka The MaD CA is a Chartered Accountant (CA) and the former Chief Financial Officer of MoreGolf (Pty) Ltd (owner of The Pro Shop retail stores).
Lloyd is not your typical accountant. I have summitted Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Aconcagua and completed polar training in Svalbard Norway in April 2010. My friends and colleagues think that I am MAD as a result of my exploits but I like to think of MaD as ‘Making a Difference’.
When was the first time somebody called you ‘MaD’?
I made the announcement that I would be leaving MoreGolf at the end of February 2011 in November 2010 so people had a long time to get used to this fact. This also gave people a long time to ask me what I was going to be doing and I think most people thought that I was just moving on to greener pastures. I cannot remember exactly when the first time was that I was called MAD when I told people exactly what I was going to be doing but it happened so often that The MaD CA was born.
Tell us a little bit about your expedition this year.
I will be skiing 1 168kms from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole. This will take approximately 60 days and will entail pulling a 60kg pulk in the most hostile environment on the planet. I will be guided by an American company called Polar Explorers and at this stage, two Britons are coming with me on the Expedition.
What motivated you to embark on this project?
I have been intrigued by the South Pole my whole life and the story of Robert Falcon Scott and his team inspires me. In 2009 I started investigating how I could go to the South Pole and it came to my attention that 2011 is the Centennial year since Amundsen and Scott went to the Pole. I decided there and then that I wanted to be a part of this celebration and in some small way honour them.
How are you preparing for your expedition?
I realised that I would never be able to undertake an Expedition of this
magnitude whilst still working as a Chief Financial Officer. I have therefore
taken a year off to embark on several training expeditions to prepare me for
the South Pole. I am spending about 10 days in the Drakensberg Mountains
at the end of April with a friend who has been on Everest. This will be a
serious training expedition to prepare me for my summit attempt of Mt Denali
in Alaska in June. I intend to spend some time in the Lesotho Mountains later
in the year as well as doing some further polar training in Norway.
I am being trained by Urban Fitness Outdoor who are in the process of
transforming me into an Athlete. I have one on one training sessions with
the owner Jonathan Cloete five times a week and I attend the group training
sessions five times a week.
What has kept you motivated to carry on preparing month after month?
Motivation for me comes from within although I do think that Jonathan gets an extra 10-15% out of me. I am motivated to be an Athlete, to be transformed in both body and spirit and to not let people down. I have met so many great people of late who motivate and inspire me to keep going with their kind words. I feel that I have found my calling. I love the challenge and that is all the motivation that I need.
What are you hoping to achieve?
I hope that I can inspire people to be the best that they can be. I wish that the word ‘can’t’ could be removed from our language and I hope to show people that there is no such thing. The power of the human spirit is significant. Amundsen and Scott proved that 100 years ago. I hope to be ‘Making a Difference’ over the coming year (and in the future) by raising R30 million for The MaD CA Foundation which will benefit the Aged, the SPCA and The Rivers Foundation.
Where to from there? What else have you got planned after this?
I am officially hooked on Expeditions. My friend and I intend to summit Cho Oyu, Everest and K2 between September 2012 and August 2013. I am not aware of any South Africans who have summitted K2 and we are hoping to be the first. I would then like to become part of the Seven Summits club by summitting Mt Elbrus, Carstensz Pyramid and Mt Vinson. This will take me through to 2014 whereafter I want to ski to the North Pole and circumnavigate Greenland. This is my 5 year plan – forever a CA.
Anything you’d like to close with and say to our readers?
It has taken me 40 years to wake up to the fact that the greatest investment that you can ever make is in yourself. No-one can ever take that away from you and without your health you have nothing. The body and mind are intertwined. With a healthy body you will have a healthy mind and a healthy mind will strive for a healthy body so take that potato chip out of your mouth, get off of the couch and start Getting Fit.
